Is your data really secure?

Companies often assume their data is being backed up.  Are you sure?  Ask yourself the following questions.

  1. How frequently is your data backup running?  Daily, weekly, monthly?  Is this enough?
  2. What data is backed up?  All files?  Your email messages?  Your contact list?  The fileserver?  Individual workstations?  You may not be backing up the data really important to you.
  3. Are you backing up a server database?  Special steps must be taken to ensure the data is actually being backed up correctly.
  4. Are you testing your backups regularly?  Are you retrieving data from backups to ensure it is working? There is nothing worse than going to restore a backup and find out the tape drive/tape failed months ago.  Checking your backups regularly is critical.
  5. Are backups being taken offsite? If your office were to have a disaster such as a fire, what would happen?  Backups must be taken offsite to protect from disaster.
  6. Is there a person assigned the task of looking after the backup process?  If not, then how do you know if any of the above steps are being looked after?  Never assume your data is safe.  Companies must take an active role in protecting their valuable data.
